The new album from Daring Coyotes ventures into epic new territory, building upon the production and arrangement tools first wielded on The Aftermath to create vast soundscapes embedded within psychedelic bluegrass songs. The songs, written by David Clark Carroll, were almost all written in the winter of 2024 and cover topics ranging from life in the happy valley, ecology, geological time, buddhism and politics. The newer song Outlandish Times came about in February 2025 while recording and producing the album and struggling with how to describe the state of the world with this project. It grounds the other material in the moment and provides and acknowledgement of the reality we’re suffering through.
Sonically this album represents many new frontiers for the band, integrating textures such as overdriven guitar leads, and bringing Ryan Seiler on board full time to play bass brings a whole different dynamic and drive to the band. It sounds like a full band effort as David plays guitar, mandolin and mandola in layer upon layer creating cello like effects with the aid of a few key effects pedals and a brutal cross picking technique. Organized into a side A and side B with the goal of being pressed on vinyl one day and to encourage full album listening, the flow and track order are perfect for the living room listening session at just over 20 minutes a side.
However, all these songs are built around primary performances by David on his Martin guitar and his voice. Folk songs at their core, dressed up with orchestration to allude to the uncertainties of the times and with an eye towards the future. This isn’t truly bluegrass anymore, but it’s firmly grounded in the traditions founded by Bill Monroe and and Doc Watson as furious flat picking and Monroe style mandolin can be found on nearly every track.
